Ages 2 years 9 months through 6 years
The Plymouth-Canton Montessori School preschool/kindergarten program provides an educational, creative, social, and most importantly, a pleasurable experience for children aged 2 years 9 months through 6 years. They will be able to associate with other children and responsive adults in an environment specifically tailored to the needs of small children.
Our multi-age classrooms provide Montessori materials…
We have a complete Montessori program, with full equipment in all areas: Practical Life (polishing, sorting, grace and courtesy, personal care, food preparation, etc.); Sensorial (texture, weight, size, color, shape, sound); Mathematics (proportion, counting, decimal beads, computation); Language (verbal development, pre-writing and writing, pre-reading and reading); Geography (large puzzle maps and related materials); and Botany.
Science and Nature…
We also offer many additional experiences in science, including simple experiments, magnets, magnifying lenses, balance and measuring equipment, plants and animals to care for, and a variety of nature study materials such as rocks and shells. Our school grounds include a garden and a small wooded area.
Art, Music, and French…
Our creative program is complete and varied, with art materials placed where the children may use them freely. There are also teacher-directed art projects, where new media and techniques are introduced. Prints, paintings, and sculptures are shown to the children, and left in the classrooms to be enjoyed. The music program includes singing and dancing, sound and motion games, use of rhythm band and Orff instruments, music appreciation, and the traditional Montessori music materials. A music program is performed in the spring for family and friends. Children are naturally language-receptive at this age and readily acquire another language. Learning basic phrases and the names of everyday objects and events through games and hands-on materials introduces the children to another language.
…and Lots More!
Two fenced play areas are used for outdoor time. There are large and small group activities and games, poetry and singing, books for free and group reading, regular cooking experiences, and guests who give informative demonstrations and talks. Mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and late-afternoon snacks are served.
Morning preschool classes meet from 8:45-11:45 a.m. and afternoon from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Day care is available for enrolled children beginning at 7 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m.
Extended Day Kindergarten
Extended Day is a full-day academic program for children of kindergarten age. It serves as a bridge to elementary (particularly Montessori elementary), and offers in-depth explorations of academic materials. Children remain in the Montessori classroom for the entire day, which affords them many advantages. They develop increased attention to a task as they work on activities that require multiple steps and a longer period of time to complete. Lessons such as complex numeric works or story writing that would have taken several days to complete can often be accomplished in a day. Advanced work, field trips, and “big” projects are all part of the Extended Day experience. Leadership skills emerge and social skills are refined as the children accept more responsibilities within the mixed age group. Extended Day children serve as mentors and role models for the younger students, and are very proud of their status as class leaders. In addition, the children have lunch together and experience monthly off-site field trips to enhance the learning in the classroom.
Extended Day classes begin at 8:45 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. Latchkey is available for enrolled children beginning at 7 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m.
